TH Sound for Spanish Speakers

Overcome the most common English pronunciation challenge for Spanish learners

Why TH is Difficult for Spanish Speakers

Spanish does not have the TH sound. Instead, Spanish speakers are familiar with:

  • /s/ sound: Like in "sí" (yes) - tongue inside the mouth, behind the teeth
  • /t/ sound: Like in "tú" (you) - tongue touching the teeth
  • /z/ sound: In some Spanish dialects - similar to English /z/

Result: Spanish speakers often replace English /θ/ (think) with /s/ (sink) or /t/ (tink), and /ð/ (this) with /d/ (dis).

Spanish /s/ Sound

Your tongue is INSIDE your mouth, behind your top teeth. The air hisses between the tongue and the roof of the mouth.

Example: "sí" (yes)

Tongue stays inside

English /θ/ Sound

Your tongue is BETWEEN your teeth. The air flows between your tongue and your top teeth, creating a different sound.

Example: "think"

Tongue sticks out between teeth

Step-by-Step Guide to Produce /θ/

1

Open Your Mouth Slightly

Your mouth should be relaxed and slightly open, like when you're about to say a vowel.

2

Place Your Tongue Between Your Teeth

This is the KEY DIFFERENCE! Let your tongue tip stick out BETWEEN your upper and lower front teeth. This is NOT how Spanish works!

3

Blow Air Between Your Tongue and Teeth

Push air out between your tongue and your top teeth. You should hear a soft "th" sound, not a "s" sound.

4

Keep Your Tongue Relaxed

Don't tense your tongue. Just let it rest flat between your teeth and let the air flow naturally.

Practice: Spanish /s/ vs English /θ/

Try these exercises to train your mouth to make the difference:

Exercise 1: Feel the Difference

Spanish /s/: Say "sí" (yes) and feel where your tongue is - INSIDE your mouth

English /θ/: Say "think" and feel where your tongue is - BETWEEN your teeth

Repeat this 5 times, paying attention to the tongue position.

Exercise 2: Mirror Practice

Look in a mirror and say these words:

  • • "think" - you should see your tongue between your teeth
  • • "thank" - same tongue position
  • • "three" - same tongue position

Tips for Spanish Speakers to Master /θ/

  • 💡 Tip 1: Use a mirror! Watch your tongue stick out between your teeth. This visual feedback is crucial.
  • 💡 Tip 2: Practice the minimal pairs daily for 5-10 minutes. Your brain needs time to create new muscle memory.
  • 💡 Tip 3: Exaggerate the tongue position at first. Make it very obvious that your tongue is between your teeth.
  • 💡 Tip 4: Record yourself and compare with native speaker audio. Listen for the difference between /s/ and /θ/.
  • 💡 Tip 5: Be patient! This sound takes time to master. It's not natural for Spanish speakers, so don't expect perfection immediately.
  • 💡 Tip 6: Practice in context. Read sentences aloud that contain /θ/ words to practice the sound in natural speech.
